Growing independence gives Loudoun students more ways to get around—walking, biking, riding an e-bike, taking the bus or traveling by car. With that freedom comes responsibility. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) reminds students, parents, drivers and pedestrians that everyone plays a role in keeping children safe.
E-Bike Safety
Virginia’s three e-bike classes:
- Class 1: Pedal-assisted, up to 20 mph
- Class 2: Throttle-assisted, up to 20 mph
- Class 3: Pedal-assisted, up to 28 mph
- Any other device is most likely unlawful to operate to and from school
Class 3 requirements: Riders under 14 must be supervised by someone at least 18; operators and passengers must wear an approved, properly fitted helmet; and e-bikes must have a speedometer displaying mph. Class 3 e-bikes may be restricted on certain paths and may not be modified to increase their motor-powered speed.
Parents: Know your child’s e-bike class, speed and applicable rules/laws. This would include the use of electric scooters.
Getting to School Safely
Pedestrians: Use crossings, follow crossing guards and stay alert.
Bicycle/Scooter/E-Bike Riders: Follow traffic laws, wear the appropriate rated helmet and never assume drivers see you. Ensure lights and reflectors are in place and operational.
Bus Riders: Follow bus rules and the driver’s instructions.
Parents: Discuss safe routes, traffic awareness and helmet use. Check bikes and e-bikes regularly.
Drivers: Slow down in school zones and residential areas. Watch for students, buses and riders. Everyone: Stop when a school bus is stopped with its warning lights and stop arm activated, as required by law.
Freedom Comes With Responsibility
Slow down. Pay attention. Follow the rules. Wear your helmet. Look out for one another. Whether you walk, ride, take the bus or get a ride, getting to school safely is a shared responsibility. The LCSO is committed to education, prevention and keeping Loudoun students safe.
